Chapter Eleven
They’d been on the sea for almost a fortnight, and Rorik and Terren had fallen into an easy routine. Terren was given free range of the deck so long as he didn’t try to run. He was actually quite useful about the ship, especially on the upper mast and sails. He shimmied up the wood like he was born to climb and often circled the ship to stretch out his magnificent wings. It seemed he’d been born to sail with Rorik’s men, and he embraced the lifestyle as if he’d done it his entire life.
“The men think he’d good luck,” Olaf commented as Rorik absentmindedly watched his lover circle overhead. It was late in the afternoon, and the sun was casting the world in lovely shades of purple, gold, and red. The sight of the siren’s glorious golden body painted in those colors made Rorik sigh in appreciation.
“He is good luck. Have you noticed how perfect the weather has been, despite the late time of year?” Rorik said, his eyes never leaving the siren as he swooped and dived. He’d make a good lookout from that height. Perhaps Rorik would make the suggestion later. Terren’s whole countenance lit up when he suggested a new duty.
“Yeah, I’ve noticed. I think every experienced sailor has been marveling over the lack of storms lately. Perfect weather. The wind in our favor. Hardly any rowing to be done. The men give all the credit to your prize. They think he’s heralding them home on your command.”
“I won’t disabuse them of the notion,” Rorik said with a smile, finally able to tear his eyes away from Terren as he swooped and landed on the uppermost edge of the mast. “He’s quite helpful and is as anxious as we are to be back on dry land.” To be honest, Terren was more anxious to see Rorik’s home than anything else. They’d grown close over their time at sea, and the more he spent with Terren, the more he liked him. He was still keeping something from him, but there was plenty of time to find out all of the siren’s secrets. It was only a matter of time before he knew everything about him.
“So he’s looking forward to traveling to your home?” Olaf asked. “He’s put his desire to escape aside?”
Rorik nodded. “We’ve come to an arrangement. He realizes that he’ll attain his own desires much more easily with me than with his former pantheon.” He was starting to care about him more than he should have. He had to constantly remind himself that this was an arrangement and not a love match.
Olaf slapped his friend on the back and grinned. “Of course it has nothing to do with the fact that you two fuck constantly and you’ve introduced him to the world of carnal pleasure.”
Rorik shoved at him. “That has nothing to do with our agreement.” He gave a mock growl, and Olaf laughed.
“He looks at you like the sun has set in your ass crack!” Olaf teased.
